Ever since a travel guidebook had featured the Sonoda Inn for its delicious breakfast, the inn had started gaining very good business. Sarina Sonoda was in an apron, serving breakfast and chatting with the guests. A couple, who seemed to have come for marine sports, was lavishing the inn with food with praise.
“This fish is incredible. I could eat this forever.”
“The miso soup is also very impressive. I wonder if the beautiful young lady here made it?”
Sonoda laughed.
“Thank you very much, but my mother was the one who made the miso soup. Please feel free to treat yourself to more, and with more rice if you like.”
The TV was playing a morning talk show, and it began displaying news of the youngest astronaut in history, a young Japanese woman. The couple responded in surprise.
“Oh, that girl is amazing. She’s so young, too. Twenty-three years old, isn’t she?”
“She’s so sweet and cute that you wouldn’t think she’s an astronaut at first glance.”
Sonoda’s eyes were glued to the screen.
On that screen was her “student” finally achieving her dream.
The astronaut, Yuuki Joujima, was speaking with a female TV announcer through relay from the Super International Space Station.
“You’ll finally be returning to Earth in three days. As the youngest astronaut in history, what are your thoughts?” asked the announcer from the TV studio.
Yuuki, who was on a mission with a Russian crew, responded with a somewhat mature smile on her face.
“Based on my experiences here, I would like to continue pursuing research in making contact with the Presenters.”
And then, she added one more sentence, one coming more personally from herself.
“Hey, Gen, are you watching?”
With a playful air, she called out to her best friend. Sonoda narrowed her eyes and muttered to herself.
“Gen…”
Gentarou Kisaragi. He seemed to be working very hard as a New Amanogawa Academy High teacher. She’d received a letter from him the other day, and while he still seemed to be getting a grasp of things, he was taking the challenge on with gusto. He’d spelled out his feelings in plain and fervent words. She’d burst into tears upon seeing his last sentence.
“I was able to become a teacher thanks to you, Sono.”
She was proud of him.
