It’s really lonely, thinking that we were like relatives who got together every six months, and now we’re going to have a hard time getting together again. During the post-recording, we all had lunch together ♪ I was at the same table as Chika Sakamoto-san…I’m going to treasure that time ♪

1. Please tell us about your impressions about finishing recording for everything up to Digimon Adventure tri. — Part 6: Future, the atmosphere during post-recording, and anything that left an impression on you.
It feels like you accidentally got caught into some time warp portal, or that you’ve ended up in a parallel, world, but ultimately you have to face the complicated feeling that this is, in the end, reality.
It was a very nice and fresh feeling to record with some time left, due to how theater screenings work.
Matsuzawa-san1, who played an announcer for the series, got to watch us do post-recording after her part was finished, and (she said this herself) couldn’t have imagined that a fan like herself would ever get to see this, and then actually get to go see it at the theater! Birdramon and Togemon
Taichi and Agumon being so cool

Post-recording involves recording when the animation isn’t completely finished yet2, so Director Motonaga said, “we made a lot of changes to the animation so we could match the power of the acting from the post-recording,” and it was really encouraging, and they really did put some unearthly things in the final product.

It was a long period of time that felt like a mere moment, and every time we recorded it was full of density, and as we went by Parts 1 and 2 and more and more post-recording sessions it ended up being a very valuable experience. Being able to play the same role, for the same series, for three straight years, made up a very special and precious time of the sort that I don’t know if I’ll ever have again. And to be in the Digimon series of all things, a series that I watched to enthusiastically in front of the TV as a kid, it really did somehow feel like some kind of miraculous stroke of fate. When people grow from children to adults, I think everyone has to walk the path of having to overcome all sorts of internal conflicts and hardships. The worlds we live in can take different forms, but the universal impulses that everyone feels will never change, and that’s exactly why we empathize, and want to support each other. Digimon is a very important series that constantly pushes us on from behind. Please watch it to the very end.

Between the Digimon team made up of those who were given the opportunity to play their old roles again, and the Chosen Children team who had to take on their new roles, it may feel like we all started off differently, but in actuality, during these last six parts, we all ended up exploring new depths and discovering new things together. And when it all ended, I thought, I really do want to do more with these people. I want to make this world more colorful…I do. And after we’d finished, I felt the warmth between our teams more than ever. They’re friends we could really rely on.

Digimon tri., with new friends.
When I think back to the beginning, there were times that were a bit confusing, but we all played together, and fought together. And thus, the Chosen Children and their Digimon joined together as one. Even though they had to endure many things as they lived on. Even so, I think this final part still lets you feel the same love for their friends as they’ve always had. So I’d say everything is a highlight! And I hope you watch it while thinking about all of the parts released thus far.

The recording session felt like a dream, so I couldn’t focus myself that well, but once I saw the finished footage, I realized that this really was the last time after all. It’s a lonely feeling, and I really wish I could see more of how the kids grow!
By Part 6, we’ve all gotten a very firm image of what each character is like, and the atmosphere of the recording site was very warm, and it was a relief to the heart to be able to meet everyone at places like the post-recording and other events. I’m so, so full of gratitude!

Seeing what happens to Taichi-san and Nishijima-sensei, and Hikari-chan…!

Meiko and Meicoomon got to meet everyone in Part 1. And then this and that happened, and, at last, we’ve reached the final part of the story. I went to the recording site thinking, we’ve finally made it here! My heart was pounding. Meiko and Meicoomon, who started out all by themselves, are surrounded by friends. I was incredibly nervous prior to recording for Part 1, but all of the Digimon senior voice actors welcomed me with so much warmth and strength, and I got to be truly happy in the role of Mimi.
And in particular, Kinoko Yamada-san, who plays Palmon, brought me things like homemade blueberry jam, and a rare kind of oolong tea, and she did this every time we recorded, and it really gave me a source of relief through all of the tension.
It’s a really mysterious feeling, but I feel like the actors for the kids, and our Digimon senior voice actors, are like childhood friends that we’ve known for a long time. And I feel like it’s not quite over yet…

Thank you for all of your support thus far. We’re finally at the last part of Digimon Adventure tri. What kind of high school students have Taichi-san and his friends become? How do they go from being “Chosen Children” to “adults”? I myself had a lot of expectations, and a bit of anxiety about it. Having seen all six parts now, I feel like thre’s a huge hole in my heart. I wonder if this is what it means to be an “adult”. Each and every person watching this probably has parts they relate to, and parts that feel all too real. I got so lonely thinking about how my time with everyone was going to come to an end, and so I looked up at the studio ceiling (actually, the studio for this one had a lot higher of a ceiling than the ones we’d used before), and my thoughts started drifting to a certain commercial on TV, and I thought, “yeah, I absolutely understand that guy when he says he hates ceilings being too high.”5

I heard that the actors for the Chosen Children were really happy to be able to appear in a series they loved so much, but were also very nervous…but I think we as the Digimon actors were way, way more nervous about it.
Fifteen years…is a very long time. Have we lost our freshness? I think it ended up being a huge push for all of us. Can we pull off what we did back then? Can we pull off what we weren’t able to do back then? Can we still evolve with guts?6
Our partners ended up taking very good care of us old folks. In particular, seeing Hitomi-chan take such good care of Kinoko-chan brought a smile to my face.

Aaaargh! You kept us waiting for so long! Taichi~! Taichi’s return, where he looks so cool ❤
It’s a culmination of everything that’s happened since the original Adventure, and everything that’s happened since Part 1.
Everyone became so much stronger, and so full of resolve.
There was one particular scene that made me feel like I was flipping through a childhood photo album, kinda. It made me cry.

We’re finally here…it’s a relief, but it’s mixed in and jumbled up with all the loneliness.

And be sure to breathe.

1. Please tell us about your impressions about finishing recording for everything up to Digimon Adventure tri. — Part 6: Future, the atmosphere during post-recording, and anything that left an impression on you.
It’s already been a while since we recorded for Part 6, but it made me realize how much time has passed since Part 1.
All sorts of things happened, but this is only one thing that can be called an ending, and I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in one series for such an extended period of time before, so although I’m exaggerating a bit, I somehow started to reflect on it as a time I came to live through it, rather than just what we recorded or memories of what we did at the site.
Even now, Yamato’s “let’s go, Gabumon!”, one of the first lines I ever recorded as Yamato, and the “yeah!” I got back, has a strong impression on me.
2. Please tell us if there are any points in Digimon Adventure tri. — Part 6: Future that make you go “Please look at this! I highly recommend this!” (It doesn’t have to be a scene you were in)
The scene where the kids finally come to choose their own future.
I felt it was a very harsh and realistic scene, more so than the things I’d seen in the kinds of anime I watched as a kid.
It really got me to start thinking about things, and it’s harsh in some ways, but very normal in others, and that depiction is something I feel can be supported by people of all ages.
3. Please leave a message for the Digimon fans who are looking forward to Part 6.

When I first heard that there were going to be six parts, I thought, that’s so loooooong!, but it actually went by in the blink of an eye.
During the break, I was struck by how we, as the Digimon voice actors, kept slipping into old person talk during the breaks (laughs).
2. Please tell us if there are any points in Digimon Adventure tri. — Part 6: Future that make you go “Please look at this! I highly recommend this!” (It doesn’t have to be a scene you were in)

Thanks to everyone’s support, we reached the goalpost at the end.

- “Matsuzawa-san” = Chiaki Matsuzawa, an event host and announcer who gained a large amount of attention at the first DigiFes in 2014 (the event where Adventure tri. was first announced) when she openly cried onstage and admitted that she was a childhood Digimon fan, and was honored to be able to host such an event. She continued to be involved in hosting Digimon events thereafter, and was also given a minor voice role as a news announcer in Adventure tri. [↩]
- Post-recording for Japanese anime generally involves having the actors record to incomplete animation (sometimes incomplete to the extent of being only timed storyboards), so the process that Shigematsu describes is fairly standard practice in the industry. [↩]
